What can you and I do to fight the far greater epidemic of fear, ignorance, and prejudice against HIV/AIDS, and persons living with the disease?
Here are my few suggestions. I’m sure you can come up with more ideas…
- Get tested at the World AIDS Day Exposition, which will be held today at Devon House in St. Andrew, starting at 10:00 a.m. The exposition is open to the public and will feature free voluntary counselling and testing services using the rapid HIV test.
- Assist the families and friends of a person living with HIV. Find out what their needs are. Provide emotional support to them and the person with HIV, today and beyond.
- Raise funds by having a red-themed, non-uniform day at schools and workplaces. Donations can be made for wearing red.
- Train student leaders in HIV prevention and communication to their peers.
- Plan activities for your church, community, or office to observe World AIDS Day and raise awareness on an ongoing basis. These activities could include workshops, drama, rallies, sporting events, competitions, and distribution of educational materials.
- Hold a concert, raffle, or auction, featuring popular local artistes and personalities, in which the proceeds go towards fighting the spread of HIV/AIDS, as well as to ensure that persons living with HIV have access to the treatment and care that they need.
