New Beginnings

Today marks the beginning of a new school term. Among other things, it means I’ll need to leave out much earlier in the mornings, to avoid the anticipated heavy traffic. Oh, how I miss summer already.

Bruce Golding

Then, a historic event is slated to happen tomorrow. Bruce Golding will be sworn in as Jamaica’s eighth Prime Minister, signalling the first time in over 20 years that a Prime Minister will be sworn in from the Opposition party. Indeed, a new beginning for the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP). And Portia, what of her political future, now that the leadership role has shifted? Will it be a not-so-happy ending?

Like most Jamaicans, I’ll be watching closely to see what will transpire after Golding selects his new Cabinet, reportedly this week. I imagine that one of the pressing items on his list will be the matter of the promised free tuition for students in secondary institutions. With the start of the new school term, parents, as well as principals and education officials, are now expecting the new government to be true to its word.

Now that the JLP has the power, let’s see what they will do with it. Hopefully, it will be a case where we’ll see “action, not a bag a mout’” from them.
